Should you choose PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it throws nothing away when it saves. That matters for screenshots, diagrams, artwork with flat colour, and any image you plan to edit and re-save several times. The cost is size: a photo saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than the same photo as JPG.
For ordinary photographs, JPG is almost always the better choice. The compression is designed for the kind of detail cameras produce, and at a high quality setting the difference is not visible. If you are converting a folder of holiday photos so they open on Windows, convert them to JPG instead.
One thing PNG does not give you here: HEIC photos from a phone have no transparency to preserve, so PNG will not add any. It simply avoids a second round of lossy compression.
How it works
- 1
Choose your photos
Drag HEIC files onto the page, browse from your device, or paste them straight from your clipboard.
- 2
They convert on your device
A WebAssembly decoder runs inside the page and rewrites each photo as a JPG. No server is involved at any point.
- 3
Download your JPGs
Save files one at a time, or take the whole batch as a single zip. The originals on your device are left untouched.
